Why Horses Are Uniquely Therapeutic
Horses are prey animals with highly developed social and emotional intelligence. They read body language, energy, and intention with extraordinary precision — and they respond honestly, without judgment or agenda. This makes them the perfect therapeutic partner.
Because horses respond to body language and energy rather than words, many participants find that working with them offers a different kind of engagement than traditional talk-based settings — one that feels less pressured and more immediate.
Many participants report that skills practiced in the arena — such as focus, communication, and confidence — carry over into everyday life, relationships, and school or work settings.
Nervous System Reset
The rhythmic movement of horses is widely cited as calming. Many participants report that time spent with horses helps them feel more grounded and present.
Oxytocin Release
Research suggests that positive human-animal interactions may support bonding and emotional connection. Many participants report that building a relationship with a horse is a meaningful step toward rebuilding trust more broadly.
Biofeedback Loop

About Our Program
Equine Education Foundation is a New Jersey–sanctioned therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities program, co-founded in 2002 and operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Shamong, Burlington County, NJ. We work with the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities to serve eligible riders.
Veterans in our sponsorship program and their family members receive services at no charge, made possible by donor support. EEF does not bill insurance. Other riders pay directly.
